Blog Post: SPS2010 - PowerPivot System Service is invalid or does not exist

Problem –
when trying to start the SQL service analysis service form Central administration you get the error:-
"The PowerPivot solution that is associated with the PowerPivot System Service is invalid or does not exist "

 Root Cause-
The SQL analysis service tried to load the assembly "Microsoft.AnalysisServices.SharePoint.Integration.DLL" which is by default located under "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies\" but it couldnt find it .

Resolution –
The issue might appear if the installation of the PowerPivot add on on different location from the SQL server default installation location.
to workaround this:-

- Copy the Microsoft.AnalysisServices.SharePoint.Integration.dll to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies\" and create "SDK\Assemblies" if they don't exist.

- Then from Add/Remove Programs , run repair for the default PowerPivot instance. this would reinstall the PowerPivot add on the new location "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies\".

A simillar error and solution exists here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2261507
