What are some of the fastest events in the Universe? Electron motion around an atom ranks right up there. Next question: how do you measure the fastest events in the Universe? (hint: Casio is not going to help you here) You need to use a measuring stick that has a scale similar to that of the events you are measuring. The lack of this sort of measuring stick is the reason that no one bothered trying to track electron motion around an atom until recently.
But science marches on, and in this case, it marched into the lab and bullied a bunch of engineers into creating a shiny new laser, known as a BFL (that's actually short for "big f***king laser"). A BFL generates light pulses that are around 1fs (or even shorter) in duration. With this laser, suddenly all things are possible, as demonstrated in a recent Nature Physics publication. In it, researchers describe using very high energy photons in very short bursts to excite the electrons in atoms and then measuring their response.
