In a message posted on the Mortal Kombat Facebook page, it's described as a "temporary solution that will only be available while Playstation Store is unavailable." The PlayStation Store is currently rumored to be coming back on Tuesday, May 24. Whenever it does end up coming back online, players will then need to redeem their Kombat Pass (or buy one for $9.99) to continue playing online.
Even with the PlayStation Network returning last Saturday, bringing with it the ability to play PS3 games online for the first time since April 20, Mortal Kombat remained an offline game for many. That's because online play requires players to redeem the Kombat Pass code that comes with new copies of the game, a process which relies on the PlayStation Store. That requirement is now being dropped in order to allow players to start playing online.
